News on Patstat 2015a ediction

just received Patstat 2015a ediction. These are the changes:

a) A new table TLS906_PERSON has been added which is the same as the TLS206_PERSON table but now includes both harmonised names developed by OECD and the ECOOM team from the KU-Leuven. (HAN & EEE-PPAT tables).
For future new versions of the HAN and EEE-PPAT tables (based on this PATSTAT edition) we refer to respective webpages from OECD and ECOOM. PATSTAT users who install this new TL906_PERSON table can omit the TLS206_PERSON table because all the data is duplicated in the TLS906_PERSON table.

b) Table TLS208_DOC_STD_NMS has been removed and the data has been integrated in the TLS206_PERSON (and TLS906_PERSON) table. This increases the size of the TLS206_PERSON (and TLS906_PERSON) table, but it avoids extra “joins” between the TLS206_PERSON table and harmonised names tables.

c) The table INDUSTRY-IPC, which was available in PATSTAT on-line has been replaced by TLS902_IPC_NACE and has been integrated in the PATSTAT raw data package. This table is based on the updated IPC V8 – NACE REV.2 concordance table, published by Eurostat. The reference document on the methodology is included in the PATSTAT documentation CD.

d) Based on the TLS902_IPC_NACE table, we have created a new TLS229_APPLN_NACE2 table that provides for all applications (that have an IPC classification code) the calculated weights for the respective NACE categories. This table allows quick analysis & visualisation of patent portfolios. The latest “Patent Information News” publication has a short article that illustrates this with a “Distribution of European patent filings by Airbus and Boeing” indicating that Airbus may have a more focused approach within the aircraft industry. (The latest Patent Information News is also included on the documentation CD)

e) The table DOCDB-FAMILY_CITATION, which was available in PATSTAT on-line, has been renamed to TLS228_DOCDB_FAM_CITN and was added to the raw data package. This table establishes the de-duplicated family-family citation relationships. It allows for easier (less joined tables) citation counts. The table does not distinguish between citation origin ! Analysts who want to look at citations originating from a specific procedural action such as the opposition proceedings need to use the more detailed TLS212_CITATION table with the respective publication and family tables to calculate the family-family citations.

d) TLS801_COUNTRY: ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 codes have been added, allowing easier links to other data sets that use this country code.
